Virtual Colonoscopy

A virtual colonoscopy is a minimally invasive examination of the colon. A virtual colonoscopy is safer than traditional colonoscopy and requires no sedation. A small tube is inserted rectally and the colon is inflated with room air. Thereafter the CT Scanner captures hundreds of thin sliced images through the abdomen. A conventional colonoscopy utilizes a long tube, which is passed through the entire length of the colon. The virtual scan takes a few minutes with the patient lying on his/her back and then in the prone position. A powerful computer reconstructs a 3-D image of the colon that is reviewed from all angles by our Board Certified Radiologists. Abnormalities in the colon as well as outside of the colon may be detected during the examination. Some of the key advantages of a Virtual Colonoscopy versus a Conventional Colonoscopy are as follows:

Noninvasive and safe - no risk of bowel perforation
Complete, accurate visualization - the computer software review of 100% of the colon surface (which is not accomplished with conventional colonoscopy)
No recovery period - no sedation required, therefore return to activities immediately

Currently most insurances do not pay for this examination. Please check with your carrier.
